Plastic Toggler® Hollow Wall Anchor

Back to Plastic Toggler® Hollow Wall Anchor

Technical Information:

The plastic Toggler® ® is made from a translucent polypropylene, and can be used in hollow-wall applications or in materials thicker than the wall grip range. The Toggler® ® is pre-installed without the fixture or the bolt, making installation a one person job. The body of the Toggler® ® is available in three different grip ranges, allowing the anchor to be used in hollow wall applications of 1/8" to 5/8" thicknesses.

Plastic Toggler® ® – Approvals:

Federal Specification FF-B-588D (superceded), Type IV

Plastic Toggler® - Applications:

Light to medium-duty in concrete, brick, block, drywall, masonite, plywood, fiberglass, sheet metal and paneling.

Plastic Toggler® - Installation:

Hollow Wall –

  1. Drill a 5/16" hole.
  2. Fold the Toggler® anchor.
  3. Insert the Toggler® anchor into the hole and tap flush with the wall.
  4. Insert the key to pop the anchor open behind the hollow wall (not necessary for thick or solid walls).
  5. Place the fixture or item to be fastened over the anchor.
  6. Insert the screw and tighten until the screw is flush with the fixture.

Solid Base Material –

  1. Drill a 5/16" hole.
  2. Clean out the hole.
  3. Fold the Toggler® anchor.
  4. Insert the Toggler® anchor into the hole and tap flush with the base material.
  5. Place the fixture or item to be fastened over the anchor.
  6. Insert the screw and tighten until the screw is flush with the fixture.

Plastic Toggler® - Length:

The anchor chosen is based on the thickness of the base material.  The TA Toggler® is for material thicknesses of 1/8" to 1/4".  The TB is for material thicknesses of 3/8" to 1/2", and the TC is for material thicknesses of 5/8" to 3/4".  All three sizes can be used in solid base material such as concrete.  The length of the screw required depends on the type of screw being used.  If a sheet metal screw is being utilized, the minimum lengths required are as follows:

  • TA = 1"
  • TB = 1-1/4"
  • TC = 1-1/2"
(measured from under the head to tip – fully threaded)

If a wood screw is used, the lengths above apply, but the measurement pertains to the length of the threads only (not including the smooth part of the shank). It is important to note that only the threaded portion of the screw should be in the anchor itself. Any unthreaded portion of the screw may be in the fixture itself, but not in the anchor. The TA anchor requires #8 - #12 diameter screw, while the TB and TC anchors require #6 - #14 screws.

Plastic Toggler® - Anchor Spacing:

The key activated positive locking system forms an over-center, load bearing truss.  Added load increases the holding value, as the truss moves the load away from the hole, leaving the pressure on the screw and the surface of the wall.  This over-center holding, along with the plastic composition provide high resistance to vibrations and stress from dynamic loading.  Spreading the load over the wall surface rather than the interior of the drywall itself, effectively minimizes drywall failure and maximizes load bearing.

Values shown are average ultimate values and are offered only as a guide and are not guaranteed. A safety factor of 4:1 or 25% is generally accepted as a safe working load. Reference should be made to applicable codes for the specific working ratio.

Holding values for the Toggler® hollow-wall anchor vary directly with the strength and condition of the substrate and the screw size — as well as the extent of the screw engagement - and inversely with variations in hole diameter and the distance of the load from the wall.
