Flathead Phillips Tapcon screws come in two designated diameters of 3/16” and 1/4”. The designated diameter is roughly equal to the mean diameter measurement of the screw. The outside and inside diameters are approximated as follows:
Size | Inside Diameter | Outside Diameter |
---|---|---|
3/16” DIAMETER | .15625 | .200 |
1/4” DIAMETER | .18750 | .245 |
The length of the flat-headed Tapcon is measured as an overall length including the head. The length of screw is determined by adding the thickness of the material being fastened to the required embedment depth. Since the top surface of the head of the Tapcon screw is countersunk and flush with the surface of the material being fastened, the head is included in the overall length measurement.
Both diameters of Tapcon screws have the same thread length for each length of the screw. The 1-1/4” length has a thread length of 1-1/8” and all other sizes have 1-5/8”. The 1-5/8” thread length ensures that all threads will engage the base material up to the maximum embedment depth of 1-3/4”.

1-3/4” | 1-3/4” |
2-1/4” | 2-1/4” |

The threads on the flat head Phillips Tapcon masonry screw are double lead Hi-Lo and have 11 threads per inch for the 3/16” diameter and 15 threads per inch for the 1/4” diameter.
Each screw head is marked with a specific designation to allow embedment depth of the Tapcon screw to be determined once the screw is installed. To determine embedment depth, subtract the overall length of the screw from the thickness of the material being fastened. The head of each Tapcon brand screw also has a BX stamped on the head designating it as the original American-made Buildex Tapcon brand masonry screw fastener.
Length of Screw | Head Mark |
---|---|

1-3/4” | A |
2-1/4” | B |
2-3/4” | C |
3-1/4” | D |

The diameter of the head measures .365 on the 3/16” diameter and .471 on the 1/4” diameter, as measured across the flat of the head at the widest point.
The angle of the countersunk head measures 80 degrees for both the 3/16” and 1/4” diameters.
The 3/16” diameter Tapcon requires the use of a #2 Phillips driver, and the 1/4” diameter requires the use of a #3 Phillips driver.
Each Buildex Tapcon brand screw is manufactured from S.A.E. 1022 carbon steel and coated with a Climaseal™ coating for rust resistance.
