The stainless steel Power-Stud® is Powers Fasteners’ brand name for their one piece and is fully threaded wedge anchor. The Power-Stud® comes in a variety of diameters and lengths. They are made from carbon steel that is zinc or galvanized plated, stainless steel and come in versions such as the tie wire and rod hanger. While the most widely purchased is the zinc plated Power-Stud®, they are available in galvanized, 304 and 316 stainless steel. The zinc plated Power-Stud® is designed for indoor dry environments; the galvanized for outdoor applications where moisture may be present. Both the 304 and 316 stainless steels are used in applications where the Power-Stud® may be submerged in water or where other chemicals may be present.
Types of Power-Stud® - Stainless Steel
The Power-Stud® comes in two different grades of stainless steel designated as 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel. The type of stainless steel used for any particular applications is determined by a specification or personal preference. The 316 stainless steel has better rust resistance than the 304 stainless steel and is usually used in atmospheres that are caustic, such as a swimming pool.
Diameter
Stainless steel Power-Stud® are available in diameters ranging from 1/4” to 1-1/4”. Power-Stud® made from stainless steel wedge anchors are available in 8 different diameters of 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2”, 5/8”, 3/4”, 7/8”, 1” and 1-1/4” (See chart below). The diameter of Power-Stud® to use for any particular application depends on a number of different factors, such as holding strength required, size of hole in the material being fastened, ec.

Each diameter of Power-Stud® wedge anchors comes in a number of different lengths to be used in applications that require different thickness of material being fastened and different embedment depths. (See chart below)
Thread Length
The Power-Stud® is a fully threaded wedge anchor because the anchor body is threaded for most of its length. This allows for different embedment depths without using spacers and a wide range of material thickness to be fastened. Each diameter of wedge-all wedge anchors comes in a number of different lengths to be used in applications that require different thickness of material being fastened and different embedment depths. Hole Diameter
The diameter of the hole in the concrete is equal to the diameter of the Power-Stud® being installed. If a 5/8” diameter Power-Stud® is being installed, then a 5/8” diameter hole must be drilled into the concrete. The hole must be drilled using a hammer drill and a carbide tipped drill bit. The carbide tipped drill bit must meet ANSI standard B212-15-1994.
Hole Depth
The hole must be drilled to a minimum depth to meet the minimum embedment requirements for the diameter of Power-Stud® being installed. The hole should be drilled to a depth to allow for a minimum of 1/2” space between the end of the anchor and the bottom of the hole. This space is the receptacle for any dust and debris that may be created during the installation process to fall, which ensures that it is out of the way and does not affect the installation process.
Length Identification
Each Power-Stud® is stamped on the threaded end with a letter that designates the length of the anchor. This length identification can be used to inspect the Power-Stud® once it is installed in the concrete to insure proper embedment depth.
Installation
- Using the proper diameter bit, drill a hole into the base material to a depth of a least 1/2” or one anchor diameter deeper than the embedment required. The tolerances of the drill bit used must meet the requirements of ANSI Standard B212.15.
- Blow the hole clean of dust and other material. Do not expand the anchor prior to installation.
- Position the washer on the anchor thread on the nut. Drive the anchor through the fixture into the anchor hole until the nut and washer are firmly seated against the fixture. Be sure the anchor is driven to the required embedment depth.
- Tighten the anchor by turning the nut 3 to 5 turns past finger tight or by applying the guide installation torque from the finger tight position.
